Renwick Gallery of Art: Octagon Room Case Study
The Spatial Representation and Making course’s learning objective is to apply architectural tools as an avenue to understand and document spaces in an interpretive and measurable capacity.
Over sixteen weeks we fluctuated between (1) developing conceptual drawings that represent an intangible spatial experience and (2) creating digital materializations of the built environment. The Renwick Gallery of Art served as the subject to practice diagramming, collage techniques, orthographic projections, shop drawings, and 3D digital modeling and fabrications.
I studied the Octagon Room. Located on the second floor, I remember the gallery room as a transitory space in previous exhibitions – a buffer between two smaller galleries. The octagonal shape offsets the rectangular treatments throughout the rest of the building. The symmetry of the room makes it feel organically balanced. Yet the day we began the Renwick project, the small room lit up a bright neon pink. A deep, saturated magenta bounced against the stark white walls, raised chartreuse chandelier, and enclosed skylight. The room, once abound with natural light, was dimly lit, flashing a fuschia-infused idiom about the future/present. I thought, “This is different.”Plan Collage
