A Strange HomeComing

Stumbling into a small restaurant in Nishiki Tenmangu, Kyoto, I found myself sitting amongst my Grandmother’s family.
Comically, it was a pseudo-family reunion. The group made easy conversation even though we struggled with the language barriers. My family was impressed by my chopstick skills and enthusiasm for the local Sagano Torokko train. I was grateful for experiencing my first upscale Kaiseki. Across the table, I could finally put a face to my namesake. She had a big belly laugh, like me. It was unsettling to find my Grandmother in the faces of near strangers.
A Strange Homecoming is a documentation of finding comfort in unfamiliar spaces.

What makes a home?

Three matriarchs provide their definition of a “home.”. The individual conversations between Amaya, her grandmother, her mother, and her sister are spliced and interpolated collages with family photos and found objects.
